The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) Ammendments

In April 2022, Bill 88 was passed by the Government of Ontario. What does this mean for you? This means changes have been made regarding penalties and fines for violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), among other amendments.

One of the most noteworthy changes is an increase to maximum fines for violations under the OHSA. Currently, fines stand at $100,000 but with the new amendment they will now rise to $1.5 million on July 1st, 2022. Fines will also increase for violations committed by individuals. Maximum fines for directors and officers will be $1.5 million, which is the same as organizations, and other individuals like supervisors or workers could face up to $500,000 fines.

Our team at EcoOnline wants to help you prepare for these changes by explaining how a cloud-based safety solution can help you. Let’s dive in!

How a Digital Solution Can Help You

1. Visibility

Having a cloud-based safety solution at your fingertips can grant you 360-degree visibility into your safety program and performance. With complete insight, you can easily spot gaps and deficiencies in your safety program to quickly mitigate risks and hazards to avoid possible fines under the OHSA.

It’s important to realize risks and hazards could come from a number of places, including equipment, machinery, and third-party contractors. With digital solutions in place to support these elements, you can gain an accurate view of safety at your organization. Consider having streamlined processes, procedures, and documentation in place for asset inspection, contractor management, and more to implement a comprehensive, proactive approach to safety on-site.

2. Accountability

Safety is everyone’s responsibility, from boardroom executives to front-line workers. A digital solution can help drive a sense of accountability across your organization to help reduce incidents and injuries on-site. With all members accountable, you can boost employee participation in safety activities and behaviors, strengthening your safety culture, and avoiding violations to the OHSA.

A digital safety solution can help streamline communication across the organization. For example, when an inspection is completed and submitted, team members will be able to see when it was submitted and by whom and will be able to immediately assign corrective actions to that person. The person will then be notified automatically, helping to streamline the process of mitigating risks on-site. This will help to create a safer workplace, as employees acknowledge they are accountable for these actions and play a valuable role in protecting their peers.

3. Efficiency

Lastly, a digital safety solution can help you increase efficiency. This is done by helping you to reduce incidents and injuries on-site by mitigating risks quickly, as seen above, to help to avoid company shutdowns. With less time lost, you can boost efficiency and productivity. Less violations and fines to the OHSA means organizations can stay on track with current and upcoming projects.

Greater efficiency can also be gained with a digital solution because all information is now digitized and centralized, streamlining processes. Papers will no longer be lost, misplaced, or damaged and time lost in administrative tasks will be a thing of the past. Instantly find what you’re looking for on a cloud-based platform and spend more time on priority items.
